Alan's Weight Loss Odyssey
update

I’ve been using MyFitnessPal so I haven’t been writing updates over here on alanissofatlike, but I thought I’d do it because Kristen reminded me earlier today that not everyone uses MFP.

Sooooo…

Update:
Starting Weight: 265
Last updated weight: 208.6
This week’s weight: 200.6
Gain/Loss since last update: -8 lbs
Total Loss: -64.4 lbs

Things have been going well, and I’m on track to hit my goal of 185 lbs by Christmas! And I’m almost under 200 lbs for the first time in my adult life. So that feels good. It’s only a few days away if I don’t do something stupid, like bake cookies, this weekend.

Today Lauren and Matt Maggiacomo came over to visit. It was the first time I’d met either of them IRL. Matt’s on a pretty strict diet at this time too, so we had a lot of food stuff to chat about. I was particularly curious how he does so well at staying on track while on tour. I can’t imagine gas station and fast food joints having enough healthy options. but he’s doing it, he looks great!

Anyway, I’ll probably neglect this for too long again, but eventually update it when I’m skinny and healthy and sexy, finally. Or when I lose another 8 lbs. Whatevs.

Update?

Update:
Starting Weight: 265
Last updated weight: 214.8
This week’s weight: 208.6
Gain/Loss since last update: -6.2 lbs
Total Loss: -56.4 lbs

Sorry for the lack of updates. Life’s been busy and I haven’t been hitting the treadmill as much as I should be. But I’m keeping the weight off, and even losing a little each week. So that’s exciting. Just not exciting enough to check in every week. I will try to be better about it though. =) Appreciate the check-in.

The one positive thing about Kristen being laid up in bed… she hasn’t been able to cook or go grocery shopping for 8 days now. We’ve been living off of Chinese take-out, Subway and delivery pizza. These terrible dinners have been awesome. AND because of all the extra work I’ve been doing, I haven’t gained an ounce even with all the unhealthy eating. Rock on.

Sorry for the lack of updates lately. I’ve found after almost two years of doing this, that weight loss isn’t about big huge exciting losses, it’s about very, very small, but constant losses. At least those who lose weight healthily and “for keeps”, anyway. Every week for the last FIVE months, I have been down on weigh-in day. Sometimes I’m only down 0.2 lbs from the week before, but I’m still down. And that’s all that matters.

This Saturday’s weigh in:
Starting Weight: 265
Last week’s weight: 214.8
This week’s weight: 211.6
Weekly Gain/Loss: -3.2 lbs
Total Loss: -53.4 lbs

DOWN FIFTY POUNDS

I finally did it! I hit the “50 lbs lost” mark!! Fuck Yeah!

It’s taken a little over a year and a half, but I’ve gone from 265 pounds to 215 (214.8 as of today, to be exact).

I still have another 50 to lose before I’ll be scientifically “healthy”. But I’ve been feeling pretty great lately. Between the exercising, the weight training, the healthier eating with only occasional treats… everything’s just working well together.

This Saturday’s weigh in:
Starting Weight: 265
Last week’s weight: 216.4
This week’s weight: 214.8
Weekly Gain/Loss: -1.6 lbs
Total Loss: -50.2 lbs

Oh man, getting so close to losing 50 lbs total. Should hit it next week, and that’s exciting.

Not much news this week. Got an exercise bike. It’s in my office so I can watch netflix while I pedal.

Also, we made homemade whole wheat buns this week to replace the store bought hamburger buns. They have a few more calories, but they are a whole food, made from scratch, so, zero preservatives, zero high fructose corn syrup, zero artificial anything. We’re working towards making all of our own food, food the body can actually use, and digest, and get nutrients from.

This Saturday’s weigh in:
Starting Weight: 265
Last week’s weight: 218.6
This week’s weight: 216.4
Weekly Gain/Loss: -2.2 lbs
Total Loss: -48.6 lbs

Last night I got my first ever blister from running. It’s on the heel of my left foot.

Rite of passage, I suppose.

Can’t wait for tomorrow’s weigh-in, I’ve been working my ass off this week. Hopefully literally.

down another three and a half pounds

Posting a really good number this week. Changes that I’ve made over the last week:

- eating multiple mini-meals throughout the day, rather than eating three bigger meals. I’m now eating six times per day, but only 200 calories for each meal. This means I can eat more often, but still take in less calories each day than I was last week.

- working out more. I upped my daily 30 minute treadmill workout to 45 minutes. I did this to get in more cardio time, obviously, but also it allows me to listen to an entire album, instead of a mix on shuffle, while I jog. I completely wiped my iPod and started adding full albums rather than playlists.

- started tracking my protein. Because my daily calories are so low (1,200 per day) and I’m doing a full 20-40 minutes of weight training every day, I really need to make sure I’m eating 100g of protein each day to ensure my body doesn’t start breaking down my muscles for energy while working out.

Also, just a quick bookkeeping blog thing… I had been listing my starting weight at 230 lbs, because that was my starting weight when I made this blog. But my peak weight when I started my weightloss journey last year was 265 lbs. And that’s what I’ve always considered my personal starting weight. So I’ve decided to update the weigh ins with my original starting weight of 265 lbs as I realized I might pass the 50 lbs lost mark soon, and it would be confusing to celebrate that when the blog doesn’t show that.

This Saturday’s weigh in:
Starting Weight: 265
Last week’s weight: 222.0
This week’s weight: 218.6
Weekly Gain/Loss: -3.4 lbs
Total Loss: -46.4 lbs

a chat with my weight loss coach

Yesterday I spent about two hours on the phone with Kylewilliam. We’ve been friends for about six or seven years, and in the last two years he’s lost a ton of weight. I don’t know the exact number, but a TON.

He’s been reading my blog here and wanted to offer some advice. He’s researched a lot of weight loss information, and healthy living, etc, etc.

I’ve agreed to accept his help in refining my diet. Most of the success I’ve had with weight loss over the years can be attributed to exercise, not necessarily eating the best. He’s, hopefully, going to help me change that. His plan is to have me eat six mini-meals a day, instead of the three or four larger meals I eat.

Last night I wrote down the nutrition facts for everything in the house and sent them off to Kylewilliam. I’ll find out my new recommended diet some time this week.

Exercise routine continues as it has, 30-40 minutes of sculpting/weight-lifting, then 20-30 minutes of treadmill work.

This Saturday’s weigh in:
Starting Weight: 230
Last week’s weight: 223.4
This week’s weight: 222.0
Weekly Gain/Loss: -1.4 lbs
Total Loss: -8.0 lbs

Not much to report. Still doing sculpting for 30 minutes a day, and cardio/jogging for 30 minutes. I’ve increased my treadmill speed a bit, and I’m able to fit in about 2 miles in 35 minutes. Before I was only doing 1.5 miles every 30 mins. So I’m happy about that.

Last week my weight was flat, so I didn’t bother recording it. This week I’m down a pound, yay!

My goal is to hit 200 by Christmas, but I’m starting to question if that will be possible. Can’t seem to cut any more calories, and I’m not willing to do more than an hour a day with everything else I have to fit in. Might have to make more changes to my diet, though I’m already getting tired of the Lean Cuisines and Protein shakes I’ve been consuming for months now, not sure what else I can replace.

This Saturday’s weigh in:
Starting Weight: 230
Last week’s weight: 224.4
This week’s weight: 223.4
Weekly Gain/Loss: -1.0 lbs
Total Loss: -6.6 lbs
